Get to Know Swix

In the 1940s, the Swedish founders of Swix were hard at work inventing and testing waxes to improve the performance of Nordic skis. From those humble origins, the brand expanded its scope and also began producing ski poles. That expertise in building poles translates well to supporting the needs of hikers, backpackers, and trail runners in all seasons and varying conditions. As you’d expect from a brand with such a wealth of backcountry experience, Swix poles feature ergonomic, high-performance grips and are available in a wide variety of fixed length, telescoping, and collapsible styles.

LEKI DSS Antishock Technology Explained

LEKI’s Dynamic Suspension System (DSS) reduces the peak impact force from the pole striking the ground by up to 40%, protecting muscles, joints and ligaments. The DSS Antishock system is located right above the carbide tip of the pole, which effectively dampens vibrations for a controlled pole plant with each stride.

Why Use Rubber Tips for Trekking Poles?

Trekking poles are usually built with hard metal or carbide tips at the pole ends, which provide traction on trails, snow and ice. These tips can sustain damage when used on “improved” surfaces, though, and should be covered with rubber tips or “tip protectors” when used often on hard terrain such as pavement. Just as you change your shoes depending on the specific activity you’re pursuing, you should consider your trekking poles’ tips before stepping out with them. In this Expert Advice video, Backcountry Edge Gear Specialist Becky reviews when, where and why to use rubber tips with your trekking poles.
