Back in 2016, Outdoor Research unveiled its proprietary AscentShell technology which uses an electrospun process to deliver excellent breathability with enhanced stretch while still ensuring total weatherproof protection. The jackets that have employed this technology have effectively blurred the lines between hardshell and softshell and, not surprisingly, become favorites of performance-demanding outdoor adventures. The Motive AscentShell Jacket is their lightest and most streamlined three-layer AscentShell jacket to date. Its no frills approach reduces weight to just over a pound-and-a-half and still provides a close-fitting hood, cinch-bound cuffs, and integrated hand pockets, one of which doubles as a stuff sack for the jacket.
