If you haven’t heard of Thomas Gathman, Google “The Real Hiking Viking” and you’ll learn all about his extensive thru-hiking accomplishments and enjoy his unique perspective on gear. He brought that experience to the table when he collaborated with Mountainsmith to build his pack of choice, the Zerk 40. With its vest pack-style harness, hi-tenacity ultra-lightweight fabrics, and roll-top closure, t’s a bit of a hybrid between the world of fastpacking and ultra-running. Much like Thomas, it doesn’t take itself too seriously while at the same time tackling challenging adventures like they’re everyday occurrences. It weighs in right around a pound-and-a-half but still comfortably carries up to 30 pounds with streamlined, at-the-ready storage for backpacking essentials.
