Once you’ve used and relied on a piece of gear for countless trips and over the course of numerous years, you can get strangely defensive when you hear that there are changes planned to that gear. So, when word broke that the Crown2 was getting an update, our Gear Specialists started to fret. Yes, the Crown3 is a bit heavier (about 4 ounces), but it still weighs less than 2.5 pounds and you can still remove the framesheet if you want to go lighter. The pack now utilizes Granite Gear’s RE-FIT hipbelt which has built-in fit customization that the older Crown did not. The lid can still be removed but it now has increased internal organization and has the ability to convert to a lumbar pack or clip in as a front-worn chest pack. For folks who intend to ask the pack to carry a lot of weight, the pack now has compatibility for an aluminum support stay (sold separately) which increases the standard 35 pound load rating by an additional 8 pounds. Long story short, the pack we love so much has gotten even more versatile and now delivers enhanced fit. Apparently, we were worried for nothing.
